What should I do if I find a stray animal?
Call your local police department! The stray animal will have to be impounded for a short period of time so they have a chance to be claimed by their owner. Once their time is up at the impound facility, they will be brought to Prairie's Edge Humane Society to be evaluated and put up for adoption.

What are the first steps to take if I want to surrender my animal?
Call the Humane Society at 507-664-1035 and talk with a staff member about setting up an appointment.  Cats may have to wait for available space; Dogs need to wait until foster coordinator finds a foster home.  Also fill out the dog or cat surrender profile found on the website. DO NOT just bring the animal in.

What are the first steps to take if I want to adopt a pet?

Cats: come to shelter and meet with as many cats as you need to until you find the perfect    one for you.  If you see one on the website that interests you, fill out the pre-adoption application (found on the website on top of the “adopt”) page,  this will speed up the process.

Dogs: Fill out the adoption application (found on the website on top of the “adopt” page). We will then forward it to the foster home the dog is living in. They will contact you and answer your questions: they know the dog best, as the dog is living in their home.  They will set up a meeting.

NOTE: IF  YOU ARE RENTING YOUR HOME, PLEASE PROVIDE CONTACT INFO FOR LANDLORD. ALL ADOPTIONS MUST MEET LANDLORD APPROVAL.

UPON APPROVAL OF YOUR APPLICATION: We will do the paperwork to complete the process. You will sign an adoption contract and receive medical records, microchip information, and information to help make the introduction of the new pet to your household go smoothly. Not all adoptions will happen same day as application. Landlord approval and other items are subject to verification.
Can I donate? What types of items do you accept?

We love donations! Please click on the “Giving” tab on our website and go down to the wish   list. Those are the items that we  need and appreciate the most. Gift cards and monetary donations are also welcome
Can I volunteer?
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Our biggest volunteer needs are for foster families, especially for dogs, and help at our offsite events and fundraisers. Please come in a fill out a volunteer application and we will contact you when we need help.
Can I come in and pet/brush/socialize cats?
If you are quiet and respectful of their space. Our facility is small; we may ask you to leave the cat areas to make room for prospective adopters. All children must be accompanied by an adult and remain quiet and calm.
